Project Overview
Industry: Marine & Port Infrastructure
Location: QLD
Duration: 12 Days
Types of Laser Used: Needle 300W
Summary:
PLC was engaged to assist with the repair and restoration of the boom girder on Ship-to-shore Gantry Cranes within the Port of Brisbane.
The Challenges
Corrosion & Paint Removal Over Waterways: Strict EPA compliance was required. Traditional blasting/chemicals were too risky for the environment.
Height & Equipment Access: The cranes exceeded 40 m, making access challenging. Traditional scaffolding or EWPs would be extensive, time-consuming and costly for the client.
Time Constraints & Flexibility: Tight deadlines and quick mobilisation/demobilisation was needed with coordination alongside engineering works and the ever changing weather conditions.
The Solution
Dust & Debris Control Over Waterways: Inline HEPA extraction captured corrosion and paint fumes at the source, avoiding scaffolding/containment & ensuring EPA compliance.
Height & Equipment Access: 40kg portable Netalux 300W Needle systems enabled access via the crane’s OEM Alimak lift, eliminating the need for scaffolding or EWP hire.
Time & Flexibility: Dual-shift schedule allowed 24-hour operations; sectioned laser cleaning enabled rapid mobilisation/demobilisation, keeping engineering workflow uninterrupted.
The Results
All corrosion and paint were safely and efficiently removed, restoring the boom girder while avoiding chemicals, abrasive blasting, scaffolding or EWPs. The project demonstrated PLC’s laser cleaning as a safer, cost-effective and environmentally responsible solution, ensuring EPA compliance and protecting waterways. The streamlined, repeatable process minimized downtime, reduced costs and sets a model for future high-access, overwater crane refurbishments, all completed without incident.
