Project Overview
Industry: Hazardous Heritage Restoration
Location: VIC
Duration: 3 Stages, Each lasting 5 days
Types of Laser Used: Needle 100W
Summary: Precision Laser Cleaning was engaged to remove lead paint from structural elements of the historic Queen Victoria Market. The project was crucial for the preservation of this heritage-listed site and for ensuring the health and safety of workers during the restoration.

The Challenges
Lead Paint Hazards – Originally constructed in the late 19th century, the market’s framework contains layers of lead-based paint, which poses serious health risks when disturbed by welding, grinding or mechanical removal methods.
Public Safety & Environmental Concerns – Given the market’s high foot traffic and central location, it was essential to prevent lead contamination in the surrounding environment and ensure a safe worksite for workers and the public.
Structural Integrity – After the welds were cleaned, extensive welding was required to reinforce the 100-year-old roof and trusses. Maintaining the structural integrity of the original materials was crucial, as any damage could have jeopardized the restoration.
The Solution
Precision in Weld Preparation – To reinforce the 100-year-old roof and trusses, extensive welding was required. Our 100w laser systems selectively removed lead paint from hundreds of welding points, ensuring the integrity of the original materials. Unlike other methods, this process left the parent metal completely undamaged, creating clean and safe surfaces for structural reinforcement.
Minimised Disruption – Using scissor lifts, our portable laser cleaners accessed difficult-to-reach areas with ease, allowing for efficient paint removal without interfering with other restoration works.
Fume-Free & Waste-Free Process – Unlike traditional removal methods that generate hazardous dust and debris, our laser cleaning process ablates lead paint into fumes, which are safely captured in a HEPA filtration system, preventing contamination of the market environment.
The Results
By safely removing toxic lead paint prior to welding, We eliminated exposure risks for workers and prevented airborne contamination for the public. Our non-abrasive method protected the historic market's materials, ensuring the restoration could progress with greater safety and efficiency.
