The Challenges
Preservation Requirements: Removing graffiti without disturbing the tunnel’s natural patina was essential, as the soot layers reflected its industrial heritage. The council required these aged surfaces to remain intact, ruling out abrasive or invasive cleaning methods.
Operational Constraints: Work had to be completed within five consecutive night shifts while maintaining continuous public access throughout the project.
Environmental Considerations: The use of chemicals was prohibited to prevent runoff contamination and eliminate potential health risks to the public and surrounding ecosystem.
The Solution

The Results
All graffiti was successfully removed from the heritage brick surfaces, restoring the tunnel while preserving its historical soot layers.
