Precision Laser Cleaning (PLC) was engaged by the City of Onkaparinga to remove an anti-graffiti sealant from the interior of the skate bowl at Minkarra Skate Park in Happy Valley, South Australia. The work was urgently required ahead of the busy Christmas holiday period, as the existing coating had created a slippery and unsafe surface for skate park users.

The Challenges

Ineffective Past Methods
Previous attempts to remove the sealant had failed or caused surface damage. Traditional abrasive or chemical methods posed risks of concrete degradation and public/environmental hazards.

Environmental and Community Sensitivity
As an outdoor public site near residential areas, the project had to comply with strict environmental guidelines. The use of chemicals was prohibited, and noise levels needed to be kept to a minimum — a key reason why PLC’s low-noise laser method was preferred over abrasive blasting.

Tight Timeframe
The removal works had to be completed swiftly ahead of the school holiday rush, ensuring the park could reopen to the public in peak season.

Weather Exposure
With no cover from rain, sun or wind, the exposed skate bowl required full scaffolding and encapsulation to create a controlled and safe work environment.

The Solution

Laser Equipment Used
PLC deployed a combination of Netalux 300W, 500W, and 1000W laser cleaning systems to maximise efficiency and precision across varying sealant conditions.

Access and Containment
The interior of the bowl was fully scaffolded and encapsulated, allowing safe and enclosed access for technicians while protecting the public from laser exposure.

HEPA Extraction
Direct inline HEPA filtration and dust control were implemented to maintain air quality and remove laser particulates at the point of origin.

The Outcomes

  • Complete removal of 150m² of anti-graffiti sealant

  • No damage to the underlying concrete surface

  • Delivered on time and on budget, prior to Christmas holidays

  • Skaters and local users reported significantly improved grip and ride quality

  • No chemical, abrasive, or water use — fully compliant with environmental standards
