Project Overview

Industry: Critical Infrastructure
Location: NSW
Duration: 4 Days
Types of Laser Used: Jango 1000watt

Summary:
Precision Laser Cleaning (PLC) was engaged to assist with corrosion removal and repainting the structural nodes of a live steel tower in New South Wales. The project's objective was to remove pitted metal and repaint the nodes to restore the tower's structural integrity. The corrosion was extensive due to the tower's coastal location, where constant exposure to salt and sea air had caused significant erosion.

The Challenges

  • Vertical Access: The tower's height and lack of built-in platforms created significant access challenges, increasing the complexity and risk of the work.

  • Weather Disruptions: The elevated, open-air worksite was constantly exposed to the elements, with a high risk of project delays from strong winds and rain.

  • Time Constraints: All work had to be completed within a strict four-day window, demanding highly efficient operations and coordination.

  • Live Infrastructure: Close proximity to live infrastructure and the requirement to maintain structural integrity increased the risk profile, necessitating a method that prevented damage while ensuring safety compliance for all personnel.

The Solution

  • Laser Equipment Used: PLC deployed one of its Netalux 1000watt laser systems, used in tandem with needle blasting equipment to prepare and clean 21 heavily corroded nodes.

  • Access Strategy: Rope access allowed for full coverage without the need for scaffolding or elevated work platforms reducing costs and setup time.

  • Scheduling: Daily work plans were adjusted based on weather. The team remained on standby to use clear weather windows to complete critical tasks efficiently.

  • Live Electrical Monitoring: RadMan personal monitors were used to continuously track electromagnetic field exposure while working on the live tower, providing real-time alerts and ensuring personnel safety and compliance with exposure limits

The Results

This project demonstrated the power and flexibility of laser cleaning in vertical and weather-sensitive environments. The combined use of needle blasting and Netalux laser technology delivered strong results within a compact delivery window showcasing PLC’s ability to adapt in real time while upholding the highest standards of safety, compliance, and quality. Comprehensive risk controls, including rope access protocols, PPE, and RF exposure monitoring, ensured that all works were completed without incident on a live and potentially hazardous structure.
