Constructed in 1967, Murray 1 is one of two hydroelectric power stations in the Murray Region that form part of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme—Australia’s largest and most significant engineering project. The Snowy Mountains Scheme comprises nine power stations, 16 major dams, two pumping stations, and an extensive irrigation pipeline network spanning 225 kilometres, providing peak-load power for three Australian states.

As a key asset in Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure, maintenance and refurbishment work on the Snowy Mountains Scheme is critical to ensuring operational efficiency and longevity. The Murray 1 power station consists of ten turbines, generating up to 1500GWh of electricity annually, with a total generating capacity of 950MW—enough to power over 95,000 homes.

Challenges

Beginning in 2013, Murray 1 underwent a major maintenance and refurbishment programme to extend the lifespan of its generators by an additional 15 years. A critical aspect of this programme involved the removal of lead-based paint from the stator frames of each generator turbine to allow for non-destructive testing of the welds.

Traditional paint removal methods, such as chemical stripping, posed significant challenges, including:

  • Extended processing times

  • Environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risks due to hazardous fumes

  • Potential damage to sensitive generator components

Given these challenges, an advanced, safe, and efficient cleaning solution was required to meet strict timeframes while ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Solution

Precision Laser Cleaning was engaged by GE Renewable Energy to provide a cutting-edge laser cleaning solution for the removal of lead-based paint from the generator welds. Our laser cleaning technology offered several key advantages:

  • Non-Destructive Cleaning: Laser technology ensured that weld integrity was maintained for accurate inspections.

  • EHS Compliance: The process eliminated the need for hazardous chemicals, reducing risks to workers and the environment.

  • Time Efficiency: Rapid setup and execution minimised disruption to ongoing refurbishment works.

  • Cost Reduction: The efficient process reduced overall maintenance expenses while enhancing productivity.

Outcomes

By leveraging Precision Laser Cleaning’s advanced technology, GE Renewable Energy and the Snowy Hydro Scheme successfully completed the refurbishment of Murray 1’s turbines. Our solution delivered measurable benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Safety: Eliminated exposure to hazardous chemicals and reduced workplace risks.

  • Operational Efficiency: Minimised downtime, ensuring maintenance work remained on schedule.

  • Sustainable Maintenance Practices: Provided an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional paint removal methods.

Through our innovative laser cleaning services, Precision Laser Cleaning played a vital role in ensuring the continued performance and longevity of one of Australia’s most critical hydroelectric power stations. Our expertise in industrial surface preparation continues to support the renewable energy sector with safe, effective, and sustainable maintenance solutions.
