Our Lead Paint Remediation Work on the Cringila Railway Station

Cringila Railway Station Renovation

Cringila Railway Station began a restoration project in December 2019, consisting of extensive structural restoration, repairs, and a total remediation of all lead-based coatings throughout the station. Precision Laser Cleaning was engaged on the project to perform lead paint remediation and removal on all the overpass areas above the live tracks without shutting down train services. PLC was awarded the project for our affordability, convenience, and non-abrasive nature of laser cleaning, which make us the ideal cleaning contractor for railway station renovation and other heritage restoration projects.

Cringila Railway Station, located just south of Wollongong, has been standing since July 1916, when it was used primarily by local steelworkers. It has evolved and extended over the years – which began during the Second World War when a new island-platform was added – and continuing when it was electrified in 1986. Cringila Railway Station is now listed on the local heritage register, and is serviced by the South Coast Line. The 2019 restoration works ensured this heritage station could continue to operate for years to come.

The PLC Solution for Lead Paint Laser Removal

The lead paint remediation works at Cringila Station were served by both sandblasting techniques and with Precision Laser Cleaning’s services. The traditional sandblasting techniques required large scale encapsulation and scaffolding, which were not suitable for lead paint removal in the overpass areas where the sandblasting structures would block the trainline. Instead of shutting down the railway station, the Cringila Railway Station renovation project contractor approached Precision Laser Cleaning for lead paint removal that did not require disturbing the regular train services.

PLC provided two of our portable laser cleaners to complete lead paint remediation for the project, which did not require encapsulation structures to be built. Our portable laser cleaning technology enables us to quickly mobilise our equipment, with laser cleaners that were built with HEPA extraction chambers that provide localised controlled containment of the lead paint with no bulky structures required. The ability to contain the removed lead paint in an extraction chamber is vital to cleaning projects of this nature, as it protects workers and the public from inhaling lead fumes and avoiding site shutdowns.
The project was completed on time with no disruption to the public. Learn more about lead paint laser removal.
